What is an English writing test?

An English writing test assesses how well you express ideas in written English. In this test you write 4 short pieces, from a self-introduction to an opinion on a social issue, and each one is scored on grammar, vocabulary, content and organisation. You receive a CEFR writing level from A1 to C2.

Find your writing level

Your overall score from 0 to 100 decides your CEFR writing level. This is what writing typically looks like at each level:

CEFR levelScoreWhat it looks like
A10–34Short, simple sentences about yourself and your surroundings; basic forms and notes.
A235–49Short messages and simple descriptions, with sentences linked by and, but and because.
B150–68Connected text about experiences, plans and opinions, organised around a clear point.
B269–78Clear, detailed text on many subjects, with an argument supported by reasons and examples.
C179–94Well-structured writing on complex subjects, with controlled linking and a broad, precise vocabulary.
C295–100Precise, natural writing that adapts its style to any reader or purpose.

How your writing is scored

AI reads each of your four responses on its own and gives it four scores from 0 to 100. Grammar looks at accuracy across tenses, agreement, articles and complex sentences. Vocabulary looks at range, precision, register and collocations. Content looks at how fully and relevantly you answer the prompt and its hint points. Organisation looks at paragraphing, logical flow and how you open and close.

Each criterion is averaged across the four tasks, and the four averages are then averaged into one overall score. The criteria carry equal weight, so a strong vocabulary cannot hide weak organisation.

Your personalised report

Your writing report is written from your own responses, so the examples and advice come from what you actually wrote.

  • Your CEFR writing level and your score for grammar, vocabulary, content and organisation
  • A summary of your writing, with your strengths and the areas to develop
  • A detailed analysis of each criterion and the error patterns that came up
  • Recommendations for what to practise and an estimate of the time to reach the next level

English writing test FAQ

How is my level assessed?

AI scores each of your four responses on grammar, vocabulary, content and organisation, from 0 to 100. The scores are averaged into one overall score, and that score is placed on the CEFR scale from A1 to C2.

What does the report include?

Your CEFR writing level, a score for each of the four criteria, your strengths and areas to develop, a detailed analysis of each criterion, the error patterns in your writing and recommendations for what to practise next.

What do I get for £9.99?

Two things: your CEFR writing certificate, a PDF with a QR code for online checks, and the full report on your four responses. You complete the tasks before you decide whether to pay.

How long should each answer be?

Each task shows its own word range, from at least 80 words for the first two tasks to at least 120 words for the final opinion task, so you have room to develop your ideas.
