The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is one of the most widely used frameworks for language proficiency levels, and it includes six main levels:
- A1 (Beginner) can understand and use basic greetings and phrases to get by in familiar situations.
- A2 (Beginner Plus) can understand simple information about yourself, your surroundings, and everyday needs.
- B1 (Intermediate) can understand the main points of everyday conversations and familiar topics.
- B2 (Upper Intermediate) can understand complex text and interact with a degree of fluency in most situations.
- C1 (Advanced) can understand a wide range of demanding materials and express yourself fluently and spontaneously.
- C2 (Mastery) can effortlessly understand practically anything spoken or written and express yourself with precision.

ALTE was founded in 1989 by the University of Cambridge and the Universidad de Salamanca. Today, ALTE has 33 Full Institutional Member organisations representing 26 European languages, as well as more than 120 Associate Members, several Individual Expert Members and Individual Affiliates from all around the world.
