CEFR English Level Test

What is an English grammar test?

An English grammar test measures how accurately you use English structures, from basic tenses to complex sentences. This one asks 25 questions across six areas of grammar and adapts to each answer. Your result is a CEFR grammar level from A1 to C2.

Find your grammar level

As a guide, these are the structures learners typically control at each CEFR level:

CEFR levelWhat it looks like
A1Present simple, be and have, basic questions, and singular and plural nouns.
A2Past simple, going to for plans, comparatives and common prepositions of time and place.
B1Present perfect, first and second conditionals, and modal verbs for advice and obligation.
B2Passive forms, reported speech, the third conditional and verbs followed by -ing or to.
C1Mixed conditionals, inversion for emphasis, advanced linking words and precise article use.
C2Full control of complex structures, including subtle choices of tense, emphasis and hedging.

How your grammar is scored

The questions come from six areas: verb tenses; modal verbs and conditionals; verb patterns, passive and reported speech; sentence structure; articles, determiners and comparatives; and prepositions and linking words. Every area is checked at least three times, so one weak topic cannot decide your result.

After each answer the test re-estimates your grammar level and picks the next question near it. When you finish, your final estimate is converted to a CEFR grammar level. You cannot go back to a question once you have answered it.

Your personalised report

The grammar report shows which of the six grammar areas you control well and which ones are holding you back.

  • Your CEFR grammar level
  • The share of correct answers in each of the six grammar areas
  • Strengths and focus areas, judged only where an area had three or more questions
  • A concrete exercise for each grammar area to work on

How long does it take?

What do I get for £9.99?

A grammar certificate in PDF form, verifiable through its QR code, together with the area-by-area grammar report. After the final question you choose whether you want them.
