CEFR English Level Test
What is an English vocabulary test?
An English vocabulary test looks at how many English words you know and how well you use them. This one asks 25 questions on word meaning, collocations, idioms, word formation and words in context, adapting to each answer. You finish with a vocabulary level on the CEFR scale, A1 to C2.

Find your vocabulary level
Vocabulary grows in range and precision from one CEFR level to the next. Roughly:
| CEFR level | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| A1 | Basic everyday words for people, numbers, food, colours and places. |
| A2 | Common words for routines, shopping, travel and work, plus simple fixed phrases. |
| B1 | Enough words to talk about familiar topics, including common phrasal verbs and collocations. |
| B2 | A wide range of words across many subjects, with synonyms to avoid repetition. |
| C1 | Precise and idiomatic vocabulary, including less common collocations and whole word families. |
| C2 | A very broad vocabulary with a sure feel for connotation, register and idiom. |
How your vocabulary is scored
The questions test six kinds of word knowledge: word meaning, synonyms and opposites, collocations, idioms and phrasal verbs, word formation, and choosing the right word in context. Each kind is checked at least three times.
The test is adaptive, so every answer shifts the estimate of your vocabulary level and the next question is drawn from near that level. Your final estimate is placed on the CEFR scale.
Your personalised report
The vocabulary report separates the six kinds of word knowledge, so you know whether to work on meaning, collocations or word formation.
- Your CEFR vocabulary level
- Your correct-answer share for each kind of word knowledge
- Strengths and focus areas for every area tested three or more times
- A study tip for each area to improve
