Language Audit for Companies
Know where your organisation's English actually stands. A language audit measures your teams on the CEFR scale, shows the gaps against what each role needs, and flags the risk, so you can act on a picture instead of a hunch.

A language audit is a point-in-time measure of the English capability across your teams, on one CEFR scale. With International English Test you scope the teams, buy credits, invite people by link or email, and read the audit picture in a shared dashboard: levels by team and role, the gaps against what each role needs, and where the risk sits.

Three questions an audit settles
Where does English stand?
A clear CEFR profile per team and role, so you can see the real distribution of English across the organisation rather than guessing from anecdotes.
Where are the gaps?
The distance between the English a role needs and the English people have, so training and hiring effort goes where it actually moves the business.
Where is the risk?
The customer-facing, safety or compliance roles where a shortfall in English carries a cost, flagged early rather than discovered in an incident.
From scope to a clear picture
Scope and buy credits
Decide which teams or roles are in scope and top up with the number of tests you need. Pricing is volume-based from £8.99 per test, with no contract.
Assess the teams in scope
Invite people by link or email. They take the test in any browser, so a whole department can be assessed without disrupting the working week.
Read the audit picture
See CEFR levels by team and role in one dashboard, spot the gaps and the risk areas, and export the picture for a leadership or L&D review.
One consistent measure under the audit
Every person in scope takes the International English Placement Test, a 50-question, 50-minute assessment reported on a fine eight-band scale, so an audit shows not only the level but how far each team sits from where it needs to be. It reports on the CEFR scale from A1 to C2.
International English Test is an ALTE Associate Member, and every result is aligned to the CEFR, the framework used by employers and institutions in 210+ countries. That describes the standard behind the audit, not a claim that any body requires it.
Assurance to match the finding
A broad diagnostic and a compliance-grade finding do not need the same overhead. The same assessment carries three levels of identity and supervision.
Standard
An unsupervised online sitting with self-declared identity, enough for a broad diagnostic where the aim is the overall picture rather than an individual pass or fail.
ID-Verified
Identity confirmed before results are finalised, for the parts of an audit that touch pay banding, promotion or compliance.
Proctored
A supervised sitting for the cases where an audit finding has to withstand external scrutiny.
A picture you can act on
- Set target CEFR levels per role family and hire or promote against them.
- Prioritise language training where the gap to the required level is widest.
- De-risk customer-facing, safety and compliance roles before problems surface.
- Re-run the audit later and measure the shift on the same CEFR scale.
Each individual result can also be issued as a verifiable certificate, so a finding can be evidenced person by person when it needs to be.

Frequently asked questions
What is a language audit?
A language audit is a point-in-time assessment of the English capability across an organisation or a set of teams. Instead of testing one candidate, it measures a group on the same CEFR scale so leadership can see the overall picture, the gaps against role requirements, and the areas of risk.
How is this different from benchmarking or a hiring test?
The mechanics overlap, but the intent differs. A hiring test screens individuals, and ongoing benchmarking sets a standard; an audit is a diagnostic that maps the current state and its gaps so you can plan. Our CEFR assessment for companies covers the ongoing-standard side.
Do we have to assess everyone?
No. You choose the scope, whether that is a department, a site, a job family or the whole organisation. Many audits start with the customer-facing or high-risk teams and widen from there. You only buy the credits you use.
How is the data handled?
People are invited by you and take the test through your Assessment Center, and results are processed to produce the audit picture you paid for. Personal data is handled under GDPR; contact us if you need a data processing agreement.
Can we measure improvement after training?
Yes. Because results sit on the CEFR scale, you can re-run the audit after training and read the change in levels directly, which turns a language programme into something you can measure rather than assume.
