English Certificate for Immigration

Read this first

International English Test is not a Secure English Language Test (SELT) or an equivalent approved test, and an online English certificate is not a substitute for one. Most formal immigration routes require a test from a government-designated provider list, taken in person with identity verification. Before you rely on any English evidence for an immigration application, check the exact requirement for your specific route and country with the official authority. Using the wrong kind of evidence can cost an application fee and result in a refusal.

What is an approved-provider English requirement?

An approved-provider English requirement is a rule that English evidence must come from a specific test on a government-designated list, usually taken in person at an authorised centre with identity checks. Immigration authorities publish these lists so that a language result behind an application is standardised, secured against impersonation, and traceable to a named test.

A Secure English Language Test, or SELT, is one example of this kind of designated test. Its defining feature is that the authority, not the applicant, decides which tests count, and a certificate from outside that list does not meet the requirement no matter how accurate it is.

Why does this requirement exist?

The requirement exists to protect the integrity of the decision behind a visa or status grant. Immigration decisions carry high stakes, so authorities reduce the risk of fraud and misrepresentation by controlling how language ability is measured: in person, with identity verification, through providers they audit.

That control is the whole point of a designated list, and it is why an online certificate, however genuine, cannot stand in for a designated test where one is required. “My certificate is real and accurate” is not the same as “my certificate meets the requirement”.

Which situation applies to you?

There are two different situations, and you must confirm which one applies before you act. Situation one: a designated test is mandatory. Many formal immigration routes require a test from the authority's approved-provider list, taken in person. In this situation a general online CEFR certificate is not sufficient, and only the designated test will meet the requirement.

Situation two: general CEFR evidence is used in a supporting role. In some processes, general evidence of English level is used as supporting documentation rather than as the decisive, designated proof. Examples include an employer assembling documentation about a candidate, or certain institutional and employment steps that sit alongside an application. In this situation a verifiable CEFR certificate can serve as one supporting document among others.

These two situations are not interchangeable, and a page cannot tell you which one you are in. You must verify, with the official authority for your specific route and country, which case applies before relying on any certificate.

What can and cannot a general CEFR certificate do?

A general CEFR certificate can document a person's English level in a standardised, verifiable form. It cannot meet a designated-provider requirement or serve as a visa's decisive English proof where one is mandated. The certificate establishes a CEFR level that anyone can check, and nothing more, and specifically not admissibility for any immigration route. Treat it as evidence of level, and confirm separately whether your process is one where level evidence is used at all.

Can you use this certificate for immigration or visa applications?

The honest answer depends entirely on what your route requires, and only the official authority can settle it. International English Test is an online assessment that reports a CEFR level (A1–C2) and issues a verifiable certificate with a unique ID and QR code that resolve to a public verification page. It measures reading and listening, so it documents comprehension rather than speaking or writing, and International English Test is an ALTE Associate Member, which is background about the provider rather than a claim that any immigration route accepts the certificate. What the assessment produces is a documented, checkable CEFR level, and nothing beyond that.

Where a documented level is genuinely useful, for instance an employer assembling supporting documentation for a sponsored worker, or a preliminary step that asks for general evidence of level, and you have confirmed that use with the official authority, obtaining one is reasonable. But if your route requires a designated test, such as a SELT taken in person from an approved provider, obtain that test instead; this certificate will not help you meet it, and using the wrong evidence can cost a fee and a refusal. That is different from an IELTS-for-UKVI-style designated test in one decisive way: a designated test is chosen and secured by the authority, whereas this certificate only documents and verifies a level.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an online English certificate for a visa or immigration application?

For routes that require a test from a government-designated provider list, an online English certificate cannot be used as the required proof. Some processes use general English evidence in a supporting role; you must confirm with the official authority which case applies to your specific route.

Is International English Test a SELT?

No. International English Test is not a Secure English Language Test or an equivalent approved test, and it is not on any government-designated provider list. It reports and verifies a CEFR level; it does not meet a designated-test requirement.

What is a Secure English Language Test?

A Secure English Language Test (SELT) is a designated test, taken in person with identity verification, that an immigration authority requires as approved English evidence for certain routes. Only the authority decides which tests qualify.

Why can't an accurate online certificate be used for immigration?

The requirement is about how the result is produced and secured, not only whether it is accurate. Designated routes require in-person testing with identity verification from an approved provider, so an online certificate does not meet the requirement even when it is genuine.

How do I find out what English test my immigration route requires?

Check the official immigration authority's guidance for your specific route and country, which lists the approved tests and conditions. Do not rely on a third-party summary; the authority's published requirement is the only reliable source.

Does a CEFR certificate say it is accepted for immigration?

No. A CEFR certificate records a CEFR level and lets anyone verify it. It makes no statement about acceptance for any immigration route, because acceptance is determined by the authority, not by the certificate.

If an employer includes my certificate in an application, does that make it acceptable?

An employer including a certificate in their documentation does not change whether a route requires a designated test. If the route mandates a designated-provider test, that requirement still stands regardless of who submits the certificate. Confirm which case applies with the official authority before assuming either.

The requirement page mentions CEFR. Does that mean my certificate qualifies?

A route referring to CEFR levels does not automatically mean a general online certificate qualifies as its proof. Authorities that reference CEFR often still specify how that level must be evidenced, frequently through a designated test. Confirm the accepted form of evidence with the official authority rather than inferring it from the mention of CEFR.
