Among vs Between: More Than Just Two vs Many

• We walked among the trees.

Here friends, students and trees are an undivided group, a general surrounding rather than named individuals. If you cannot point to distinct items in a relationship, among is right.

Where the myth fails

The two-versus-many rule breaks exactly on sentences like the agreement between the three companies. By the myth that would need among, but that sounds wrong, because the companies are distinct parties. Thinking in terms of individuals versus a group gives you the correct between every time.
